Can You Put Deck Tiles on Dirt?ĭeck tiles can be laid on dirt since dirt lies underneath grass. Take a closer look at the sections below to better understand how you can lay deck tiles on dirt or gravel. Pay attention to whether your tiling is going to end where a wall starts or not. ![]() If your deck tiles end where a wall starts, allow for some space between your material and the wall in case of any expansions due to heat. There’s no need to use concrete or dig into the ground. To install deck tiles on the ground, use a mesh or landscape fabric before laying the tiles. But just because you work on a surface without grass does not mean you do not have to use a layer in between. The main difference is that you will not remove grass but work on surfaces like dirt or gravel. Installing deck tiles on the ground is a little different than laying them on grass. Interlocking deck tiles have corresponding edges, which means that you do not need to spend hours trying to make individual, straight-edge tiles correspond to one another. These deck tiles snap together by design, so they can be installed more easily compared to regular deck tiles. Interlocking tiles are 1 square foot (0.09 sq m) in size and come in packs of two or as singles. While the first half of installing interlocking deck tiles is identical to the previous one, the second half is where things start to look different. Next, line your tiles up straight, interlock them, and you will be good to go. You still have to get the grass out of your way and create a sturdy base to work on. Installing interlocking deck tiles on grass is more or less the same process as installing regular deck tiles on grass. Installing Interlocking Deck Tiles on Grass This is only one way of installing deck tiles, so let’s check out how you can install interlocking deck tiles on grass. Once you place a tile onto the ground, press down firmly and add a slight boost by bringing a hammer down the sides. Place the tiles down individually, but make sure to leave a 1 cm (0.4 in) gap between each. This is probably the swiftest yet most important part of your decking adventure. That way, you can move on to your next checkpoint with ease. Adding a sturdy layer between the ground and the deck tiles will make it easier to let the material set and have the tiles connect more properly. You can use gravel, concrete, or any other solid base material for this step. Put down some solid material before getting into work with the deck tiles. This will be the thickness of your middle-layer material, which you can begin to put down as the next step unfolds. You can start by removing the grass and digging a 4 to 5 cm (1.5 to 2 in) dent in the ground. Let’s dig a little deeper into the installation process. Luckily, this is an obstacle that you can easily overcome by eliminating the grass and adding a layer between the ground and the decking. Therefore it proves to be an unstable base for laying down deck tiles. Grass is a generally wet and ever-growing surface. Afterward, you can start applying your tiles onto a dry area. Doing so will help make room for the middle layer that the tiles are going to stick to. To lay deck tiles over grass, you first need to clear out the grass and dig it down. However, it sure does need practicality and caution for a smooth outcome. Putting deck tiles on grass may not exactly strike you as tedious work. Therefore, you may need to rely on different kinds of tiles and supportive materials.ĭeck tiles are mostly used for patio flooring and not directly on elements of nature such as grass, but you can still use them on these surfaces with the right application. ![]() Direct application of decking material on grass is not possible.

We're starting to see this feature - along with audio playback - in more frames. One feature that's missing is video support, which would allow you to playback the MPEG-4 videos you shoot with your digital still camera. The built-in clock is also a nice touch - the numbers are nice and big - and we also appreciate that you can set the frame to display reminders, as well as to turn on and off at selected times. However, we liked that we can create labeled albums on the frame that you can then select for slide-show viewing. ![]() We can understand making a collage out of several images, but we didn't see the appeal in a collage made of single image. There's also a collage mode that allows you to display the same photo on the screen in a variety of sizes with various layouts to choose from. Turning back to features, aside from the increased number of transition effects, Philips has also thrown in some basic editing capabilities that include image cropping, rotating, and the ability to give your images a black-and-white or sepia tint. Naturally, the quality of the image onscreen will depend on how good the source photo is. The display had a little trouble resolving darker gray backgrounds (we noticed some false contouring), but that's a minor flaw.Īll in all, the images were very sharp with vibrant, accurate colors. In other words, if you have a fairly high-capacity memory card (512MB or greater), you're probably best off just loading the card with photos and leaving it in the display.Īs noted, we were impressed by how our pictures looked on the frame. The biggest impact of reducing your images' size (along with their file size) is that transition effects in slide show mode (you can select from 14 transition effects, as well as random mode) work more smoothly. Since the screen has 680x480 pixels, Philips says that some cropping may occur, but it must be minor because we didn't notice much in the various images we viewed. If your image won't quite translate to 720x540, the display adds black bars to the top and bottom or the sides rather than cropping your image - which is a good thing some frames chop off large parts of your picture. For instance, we shot some images with an Olympus Evolt 500 dSLR that started out with resolutions of 3,264x2,448 and were sized down to fit. The one advantage to transferring the photos to the display's internal memory is that, as part of the copying process, the unit automatically resizes the images to 720x540 pixels - or as close as it can get to that size. Another option is to upload photos from your camera to the display via a USB cable. You can choose to leave the images on the card or transfer however many will fit into the display's remaining internal memory. The 16-bit (65,536 potential colors) display has built-in memory, which allows you to store between 110 to 150 photos internally, according to Philips.Īdditionally, around back you'll find slots for Compact Flash, SD, MMC, xD, and Memory Stick memory cards (the SD slot accommodates Memory Stick and Memory Stick Pro Duo cards), giving you the ability to display hundreds or even thousands of photos. You also get a wall-mounting kit in the box. The adjustable - and removable -stand on the back lets you set the frame vertically or horizontally in landscape or portrait orientation. While you couldn't swap out the white border on the 7FF ( Read review ), the 9FF2M4 comes with three extra borders in red, silver, and black that are easy to change (they adhere magnetically). Philips calls the 9FF2M4 a 9-inch frame, but that dimension includes the width of the white border, not simply the width of the LCD. Like its predecessor, the frame looks a lot like a miniature version of the display on Apple's original iMac flat-panel all-in-one computers, with clear plexiglass around a white border that surrounds the 6.7 x 4.5-inch (8-inch diagonal), high-pixel-density LCD panel. ![]() The result is a digital photo frame that's a standout in the rapidly evolving - and expanding - digital photo frame category. Now the company is serving up a larger model, the $250 9FF2M4, which addresses the interface issue while adding several new features and maintaining its excellent image quality. We gave that model high marks for its impressive image quality and sleek design, though it did have some drawbacks - most notably, its interface wasn't quite as intuitive as it should be. ![]() Once marketed as a snack food that would not intrude on regular meals, modern marketing portrays the Milky Way as a snack reducing mealtime hunger and curbing the appetite between meals. The ITC agreed with Mars that its advertisements in fact encouraged restrained eating. In 1991, the Health Education Authority and anti-sugar lobbyists both complained, without success, to the Independent Television Commission that such advertising encouraged children to eat sweets between meals. The British version of the Milky Way bar has 96 kilocalories (400 kJ).Ī long-running advertising slogan for the product in the United Kingdom and Australia was, "The sweet you can eat between meals without ruining your appetite". Subsequently, reference to the characters was dropped, the packaging since depicting blank stars, although the faces remain in the chocolates themselves.Ĭalorie count varies. Each star is engraved with a different smiley face, representing one of the "magic star" characters portrayed on the packaging and referenced in the advertising: Pop Star, Jess Star, Bright Star, Super Star, Twinkle Star, Falling Star, Happy Star, Sport Star, Clever Star and Baby Star. Also available in Europe are Milky Way Crispy Rolls, chocolate-covered wafer rolls with milk-cream fillings.Ī variant of the Milky Way bar branded 'Milky Way Magic Stars' is marketed in the UK, with small aerated chocolate star shapes. In the UK, Mars introduced the Flyte bar which was identical to the old-style chocolate flavored Milky Way, was marketed in twin packs and discontinued in 2015. The bar is also available in banana, mango, and strawberry flavors. Originally available within Europe only in chocolate flavor, the center was revised to vanilla flavor around 1993, though the chocolate flavor still remains available in Australia. Because of this low density (0.88 g/cm 3), it floats in milk, an attribute highlighted in an advertising campaign in several European countries. The global Milky Way bar is marketed in the United States as 3 Musketeers bar. The version of the Milky Way bar sold outside the United States has no caramel topping, and consists of a nougat centre that is considerably lighter than that of the British Mars bar and the American Milky Way bar. The US (left) and global (right) bars each feature different types of filling. This campaign originated from the suggestion that eating a Milky Way bar may be a slow, involved process. The campaign portrayed the comical aftermath of what happens after someone (off camera) is distracted due to eating a Milky Way bar. In November 2012, a new print and digital advertising campaign was launched in the US called "Sorry, I was eating a Milky Way". The American Milky Way bar has 240 calories in each 52.2 gram bar the smaller Milky Way Midnight has 220 calories in each 50 gram bar and the Milky Way Simply Caramel bar has 250 calories in each 54 gram bar. In late summer of 2018, Milky Way Fudge, which substitutes the malt nougat with chocolate fudge nougat, was introduced nationwide. In 2012, Milky Way Caramel Apple Minis went on sale as a limited offer for the Halloween season. A salted caramel version has since been introduced. In 2011, Mars introduced a small size (marketed as fun size) Simply Caramel bar. In 2010, the Milky Way Simply Caramel bar went on sale, a version with caramel covered in milk chocolate and without nougat. In 1935, Mars used the marketing slogan "The sweet you can eat between meals," later using "At work, rest and play, you get three great tastes in a Milky Way." By 2006, Mars used the slogan "Comfort in every bar" in the US and most recently "Life's better the Milky Way." Forever Yours was renamed "Milky Way Dark" and later "Milky Way Midnight". The vanilla version with a dark chocolate coating was called "Forever Yours" and was marketed under this name until 1979, then Milky Way Dark was reintroduced in 1989. In June 1932, the bar was marketed as a two-piece bar, and four years later, in 1936, the chocolate and vanilla were separated. īy 1926, two variants were available: chocolate nougat with milk chocolate coating, and vanilla nougat with a dark chocolate coating, each selling for 5¢. The chocolate for the chocolate coating was supplied by Hershey's. In 1924, the Milky Way bar was introduced nationally, with sales totalling $800,000 that year. On March 10, 1925, the Milky Way trademark was registered in the US, claiming a first-use date of 1922. The lower end of that range is sufficient for everyday use, but for thicker vegetation, opt for a 40-volt model. Average to good power is 4 to 6 amps, because anything below that may struggle to cut dense weeds and grass.Ĭordless models have batteries that are rated in volts, with the majority falling somewhere in the range of 20 to 40 volts. Just like gas-powered weed eaters, electric models are available with a wide variety of power levels to fit your needs.Ĭorded trimmers have motors that are rated in amps, and more amps equal more power. If you aim to use your weed eater as a mini mower, though, perhaps a larger version is better. Choose the right balance for your body and your yard, remembering that spot weed treatment doesn’t require a huge cutting surface. A trimmer with a 15-inch cutting surface can tackle large weeds and unwanted grass very quickly compared to a 10-inch model, but the added utility comes with a weight penalty. The diameter of a weed eater’s cutting surface is similarly important. Choose a product that’s an appropriate size for your frame, keeping in mind that several Worx options have telescoping handles and several adjustment points. The size and weight of your weed eater are vital considerations because they determine how quickly you can accomplish the yard work and how comfortable you’ll be while doing it. Depending on the model, a Worx weed eater can quickly switch from trimmer to edger to mini mower, providing a clever, intuitive solution to nearly every lawn job. These trimmers require no fuel and very little maintenance compared to their gas-powered cousins, and while they may offer less power, they make up for it in versatility and ease of use. Worx offers a line of lightweight electric weed eaters that are flexible enough to handle a variety of chores and powerful enough to do them easily. Weed eaters are among the best because they physically cut back vegetation to slow its growth and remove unsightly blemishes from your lawn, and Worx makes some of the best electric weed trimmers out there.
